Employment Program

Genesee County Department of Social Services Employment Program is a collaborative effort between Office of Temporary Disability (OTDA), Job Development Bureau (JDB), and Social Services (DSS).  Genesee County DSS utilizes a pro-active, employment based, front-door philosophy stressing self-sufficiency through Jobs First.  The Intake Unit, JOBS First Manager, and Employment Program Assistants promote job searches, job referrals and supportive services to divert applicants from the need of ongoing cash assistance. The JOBS First Manager works closely with local businesses to match current job openings with an individual’s skills.   An intensive assessment is completed by our Employment Assistants and JOBS First Manager to help identify potential barriers to self-sufficiency and assist families to overcome these barriers.

Genesee County DSS contracts with the JDB to provide applicants/recipients with job readiness training and other employment-related services.  These services include a skills assessment, a goal-oriented employment plan, resume writing, interviewing skills and techniques, appropriate inner personal behavior for success in the workplace, and coping skills to successfully coordinate employment and family responsibilities.

Genesee County DSS also contracts with Home Care & Hospice of WNY to provide in home, one-on-one case management.  This case management model is used to assist individuals in overcoming employment-related barriers.  These may include inter-relationship problems they may have with their co-workers or supervisors, childcare issues, and transportation problems.

Once employment is obtained, DSS and JDB provide supportive services to assist in maintaining/retaining employment.  If cost effective, employment-related supportive services such as car repairs or insurance, transportation assistance, work clothes, etc. can be approved by DSS on a case-by-case basis.  The goal of the Employment Program is to provide the needed resources and support to restore an individual to self-sufficiency.
