Medicare Basics

Elderly Prescription Insurance Coverage (EPIC)

This program is available to those aged 65 years of age or older. This program saves money on prescription drugs. There are income guidelines for this program. Contact the Genesee County Office for the Aging at (585) 343-1611 for an appointment and/or application. Assistance with completing the application is also available. The New York State EPIC can also be reached at 1-800-332-3742.

Health Insurance Information Counseling & Assistance Program (HIICAP)

This program offers counseling in regards to the many types of insurance available. Some of the available services include:

  • Medicare eligibility, benefits, and claim filing
  • Medicaid eligibility, benefits, and spousal protection
  • Medicare Supplement insurance policy coverage, comparison, information, and claims filing
  • Long Term Care Planning and insurance
  • Other types of health insurance benefits available such as employer, retiree, Medicare Savings Program benefits, and Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC)

Medical Equipment/Loan Closet

Independent Living of the Genesee Region loans out medical equipment such as canes, commodes, walkers, wheelchairs, raised toilet seats, and bath tub rails and seats. Please call (585) 851-8501 ext 400 or http://www.wnyil.org/ilgr/ to see if the item desired is available for loan.

Mental Health Services

Counseling services are available from the following:

Genesee County Mental Health Services consists of a number of distinct programs designed to help individuals, families and agencies who are experiencing a variety of mental health needs including depression, anxiety and panic, bi-polar disorder, disturbance of thought and perception (such as hallucinations and delusions), family violence, sexual abuse, and impaired interpersonal relationships.  The clinical staff is comprised of mental health professionals of Masters-Level training.  The expertise of Community Mental Health Nurses, Psychologists and Psychiatrists are also assessed.  Various modes of treatment are utilized and include individual psychotherapy, marital and family therapy, psychological testing, chemotherapy (medication), group therapy, and psychiatric evaluations.  Overall treatment is supervised by a psychiatrist.  They can be reached at (585) 344-1421.

Catholic Charities provides counseling for families and/or individuals regarding loss and grief, many other problems of daily living, and life transitions such as emergency food assistance.  A sliding fee scale based on a person’s ability to pay is assessed.  Catholic Charities can be reached at (585) 343-0614.

Genesee County Mental Health Association, Inc. is a non-profit, tax exempt corporation dedicated to the promotion of mental health, the prevention of mental illnesses, and the improved care and rehabilitation of persons with mental illnesses.  Services provided include a bibliography of reading materials, brochures, audio and video tapes, speakers for local meetings and workshops, information and referrals, parental support groups, and psychiatric rehabilitation services.  A local social club is available with planned programs, drop in hours, prevocational training, and warm-line calls.  The Genesee County Mental Health Association, Inc. can be reached at (585) 344-2611.

Care and Crisis Helpline The Care and Crisis Helpline is a program of the Orleans and Genesee County's Mental Health Departments. It is a free and confidential, 24/7 crisis helpline answered by
