Youth Assistance

"Shaping the workforce one youth at a time…"

Look what the Genesee County Career Center has to offer young adults between the ages of 19-21!

This youth program is designed to help older youth enter or get back into the workforce, and this time to stay! The three phase program begins with the assessment process, phase two puts the youth in to a short-term training or a work experience opportunity, and the final phase follows each youth until such time that they are working and remain employed for a year.

The Assessment Process: Phase 1- during this phase, you will participate in a series of assessment tests that will test your abilities and measure your aptitudes. Together with our career counselor, an employment plan will be developed that will be the outline for the next two phases. During this time, youth will explore careers and make decisions based on the assessment findings.

Training: Phase 2- during this phase, you will sit down with your career counselor and decide the best course of action to follow. It might be immediate employment for a person who is ready, or training for those who are in need, and possibly a work experience that will lead into unsubsidized employment. Whatever the case, you will have the option as to the course of your career.

Follow-up: Phase 3- during the final phase, you will have successfully achieved employment, or possibly chosen a different course i.e. continue post-secondary education or enter the military. Whatever the case, your career counselor and you will continue to talk to ensure that you remain on the path of independence and success. If there are concerns at work, your counselor can assist. If you decide that a new job is needed, then we can assist. Whatever the follow-up need, your counselor will be there to help.

What are some of the benefits?
While enrolled in the youth program, you will learn about your skill level, aptitudes, personality type, and overall abilities. Youth will have an opportunity to try out their skills with a local employer, and if all goes well, eventually be placed at that location in a permanent unsubsidized job.

What's in it for employers?
The businesses get an employee that is ready, willing and able to perform the required job. Through our wage subsidy, the business will not have to pay any wages during the training period, allowing them to train each youth in the policies and procedures of their business, at no cost. This has traditionally been a period of lower productivity, whose cost has been paid by the employer. Not with this program, as we will cover the cost of the work experience and assist the employer as they train the youth.

Can any business participate?
Yes, as long as they are willing to hire the youth at the end of the work experience, they can participate. We are looking for employers that want to take a youth under their wing and shape them into a quality employee.

Does the youth have to reside in Genesee County to qualify?
Yes, the youth funding that we receive is for residents of Genesee County, but interested youth can still contact us and we can give you information on programs in other counties.

What are the eligibility guidelines?
Interested youth should stop in, call or email us (information below) to see if you qualify. All youth will qualify for some sort of service here at the Genesee County Career Center. Everyone is welcome to come in and use our resource room, which is complete with all the tools you need to do a quality job search. Don't Miss Our Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)!

Who can join?

Any youth ages 14 and over that meet the eligibility requirements can work in this unique workforce opportunity.

Is it just a job?

No, SYEP also provides each youth with a career coach who visits you at the worksite to provide support for you and the employer. In addition to the support, youth develop a budget and career goals with their coach.

What if I don't live near the worksites you have?

SYEP attempts to place you in a business or organization that is close to home to alleviate the transportation concerns.

Can any business participate?

SYEP works with for-profit and not-for-profit agencies that employ youth. In fact, if you are interested in a particular business that might assist you with a career goal, SYEP will attempt to place you in that business.

What hours will I work?

SYEP, you, and the business that hires you can decide on the hours. The hours youth work must be within the employment regulations for minors.

Can I work past summer?

SYEP only has funding during the months of July and August; however, youth have an excellent opportunity to prove their worth to the business. Often businesses decide to keep the youth employed even after the funding stops.

What if I don't qualify for SYEP?

The Genesee County Career Center has an excellent resource room that has complete job listings for youth and the staff to assist you to secure employment. In addition to the resource room, we offer an annual spring Job Fair to assist all youth in finding and securing employment for just the summer or beyond.
