Assistant Auto Mechanic

ASSISTANT AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
  This is semi-skilled work involving responsibility for performance of a variety of automotive repair tasks.  Specific instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed, and work is done under general supervision, subject to review.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs repair and preventative maintenance operations on such motor equipment as trucks, automobiles, tractors, hi-lifts, and compressors;
Grinds valves and fits new bearings, pistons and rings;
Assembles and times engines;
Repairs or overhauls brake systems, clutches, differentials, transmissions;
Performs minor welding operations;
Repairs generators, starters, lights and ignition;
Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;
Tunes motors and adjusts carburetors.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of standard automotive repair methods, and the terminology and tools of the trade; ability to make routine repairs to automotive and other mechanical equipment; ability to perform minor welding operations; ability to follow oral instructions; good motor, hand and eye coordination.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee constantly is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  One year of experience as an automotive mechanic in a general automotive-repair shop, or any combination of experience and training indicating the ability to perform the duties of the job.

SPECIAL NOTE:  In some school districts, employees in this class may be required to qualify as a School Bus Driver.  After meeting these qualifications, the employee may be required to occasionally perform the duties of School Bus Driver.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
Possession of an appropriate valid license(s) as required.
