 Historical Background:  Genesee County was formed from Ontario County on March 30, 1802 and comprised all of Western New York.  As populations grew with this region, the neighboring eight counties were established between 1806 and 1841 [1806 Allegany, 1808 Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Niagara (included Erie), 1821 Erie (from Niagara) and the Western Sections of Livingston and Monroe, 1824 Orleans and 1841 Wyoming].  The present Genesee County is divided into thirteen towns with six incorporated villages and one city.  County government began in 1803 with the completion of the first courthouse and the appointment of government officials.  County government grew as a result of state mandate and social changes.
 Description of Record Series:  The collection includes: receipts from the 19th Century and early 20th Century for the payment for services, materials, supplies, etc.  Also petitions for corrections to the Assessment Rolls, town board audits, town resolutions, jail list, claims for burials, purchases, trips, overseers, coroners, constables, jail, and highway expenses, unpaid taxes, grand jury lists, school commissioners annual reports, receipts, reports, contacts between Erie and Monroe County Penitentiaries, bills from various institutions for housing individuals, veterans' headstones and various bills from local merchants.
 Purpose of Record:  Documents payment for trials, construction of county government buildings, County Home / Almshouse activities, veterans' headstones, taxes, school reports, Sheriff expenses, court fees and businesses letterheads.
